Perioperative Blood Management Symposium


ABM would like to invite you to take part in our Perioperative Blood Management Symposium.


As much as we call this a symposium, we aim to offer a much more rounded experience than sitting listening to someone talk for 2 days. Our team works to create an environment and format that presents the content in new and interesting ways each time we run the course.

We use many techniques of presentation to immerse those present, including the ABM team, into a story that takes us from how it all started, through to current best practice.

The course content is based on the principles of perioperative blood management but now also includes areas of translational medicine and human factors in implementation and how team work can drive or prevent effective implementation of PBM.

Each course is themed around the venue, and the way the detail is presented is reviewed and often changed. The experience is therefore different each time as we use the collective experience of those at the course to tell the story. There will also be surprises along the way.

The content is relevant to all perioperative staff as we see the need for engagement of the whole theatre team to drive for the best possible patient outcome.





    • What exactly do we mean by Perioperative Blood Management?


    • How does cell salvage fit into patient blood management?


    • Discussion of the human factors affecting outcome of blood loss and ICS (Hayden's favourite!)


    • The physiology of blood loss and its management.


    • The differences in the technology available.


    • How do we ensure the quality of processed blood?


    • The dos and don’ts of cell salvage including controversial areas such as obstetrics and oncology surgery.

This list should not be seen as representative of the entire course that is delivered. A workbook will be given to every attendee with complete details of the course.

The content is delivered in an interactive and open ended style. Our presenters will often use the experiences of the attendees to illustrate certain points or to open areas of discussion.
